Dion Miller Sues Police and Hudson County Officials for Civil Rights Violations
Dion Miller, a Jersey City resident, spent over two decades wrongfully imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. As a result, Miller filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against Jersey City Police Department officers, Hudson County officials, and the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office. Highlighting shocking allegations of police misconduct that led to Miller’s wrongful conviction for the 2003 robbery and murder of Romeo Cavero.
A Tragic Miscarriage of Justice for Dion Miller
Exonerated in July 2023 after a thorough reinvestigation by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Conviction Review Unit (CRU), Miller’s case exposes the devastating consequences of systemic failures within the justice system. The CRU uncovered overwhelming evidence of police misconduct, including a coerced false confession obtained during a grueling 17-hour illegal interrogation.
At the time of his interrogation, Miller was mentally disabled, severely intoxicated, and subjected to psychological manipulation without legal counsel or accommodations for his disabilities. Despite clear signs of his innocence, officers:
- fabricated evidence,
- withheld exculpatory information,
- and ignored leads pointing to alternative suspects.
Legal Action Against Systemic Failures
Andreozzi + Foote, in partnership with Loevy & Loevy, represents Miller in his pursuit of justice. The lawsuit names several officers, including Sean Means, Martin D’Angelo, and Captain Vincent Doherty. Thus accusing them of knowingly exploiting Miller’s mental health vulnerabilities and actively participating in the cover-up of his wrongful conviction.
“This case is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of police misconduct and the urgent need for accountability,” said Nathaniel Foote, Esq., of Andreozzi + Foote. “Mr. Miller lost two decades of his life because of systemic failures that should never have occurred.”
Elliot Slosar, Esq., of Loevy & Loevy, added, “The psychological abuse and coercion Mr. Miller endured are unconscionable. This lawsuit seeks justice for Mr. Miller and aims to prevent future injustices by exposing the misconduct that led to his wrongful conviction.”
Seeking Justice and Systemic Reform
Miller’s lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages for the constitutional violations he suffered, including due process violations, unlawful imprisonment, and discrimination under the Americans with Disabilities Act. The case also calls attention to systemic issues within the Jersey City Police Department and Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.
