Andreozzi + Foote has filed a civil lawsuit against Cedar Ridge Children’s Home and School, Inc., and its former staff member, Joey Ericson, alleging that Cedar Ridge failed to protect a child in its care from repeated sexual abuse.
Cedar Ridge’s Mission vs. Reality
Cedar Ridge in Maryland publicly states that the mission of its Children’s Home is:
“to endeavor to meet the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual needs of each child…in an environment which is consistent, loving and encouraging.” (Cedar Ridge Ministries)
Despite this mission, however, the lawsuit reveals alleged failures that contradicted this mission and placed a child in harm’s way.
The lawsuit alleges that from approximately 1989 to 1991, Joey Ericson, a staff member at Cedar Ridge, sexually abused the victim, who was between eleven and thirteen years old during that time. Ericson purportedly exploited his position at the facility to gain access to children, including the victim, betraying the trust placed in him. Reportedly, Ericson also became the victim’s foster parent, and the abuse continued while they lived in the same home together.
The lawsuit outlines Cedar Ridge’s negligence, citing knowledge of prior staff abuse, inaction on known risks, and lack of adequate child protection policies.
Allegedly, Ericson began sexually abusing children early in his tenure with Cedar Ridge, before and/or after the abuse of the victim.
Ultimately, this lawsuit underscores the critical importance of safeguarding children and ensuring institutions uphold their duty of protection to those in their care.
Holding Cedar Ridge Responsible
The lawsuit seeks compensation for the long-term emotional, psychological, and economic harm caused by both Ericson and the institution that allowed him to operate unchecked.
This case is not just about individual misconduct; it’s about a system that failed to protect vulnerable children. Cedar Ridge had a responsibility to create a safe environment. According to the lawsuit, the institution neglected this duty, leaving the vulnerable with lasting damage.
