In 2003, Bishop Thomas J. O’Brien admitted to covering up child sex abuse by priests within the Diocese of Phoenix. Days later, he was arrested and charged for a hit-and-run car accident. In 2017, Bishop O’Brien was sued by a victim alleging repeated sexual abuse when the victim was a 2 ^nd to 5 ^th grader at St. Aquinas from 1977 to 1982. O’Brien denied the allegations.

Bishop O’Brien was ordained in 1961 and passed away in 2018.
