Survivor Files Lawsuit Against Hotel Chains for Sex Trafficking

Latest News

K.L., a survivor of sex trafficking, is suing several prominent hotel chains, accusing them of facilitating her exploitation. The lawsuit, brought under the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA), highlights the systemic negligence within the hospitality industry that allows trafficking to thrive.

Hotels Allegedly Turned a Blind Eye to Trafficking

The defendants in the lawsuit include America’s Best Value Inn, Rodeway Inn, Choice Hotels International, Inc., and Sonesta International Hotels Corporation. K.L. was trafficked at multiple hotel locations in Pennsylvania between 2016 and 2017. The lawsuit alleges that hotel staff ignored clear signs of trafficking, such as:

  • A steady stream of unregistered male visitors entering and leaving hotel rooms.
  • Victims showing visible signs of abuse, including malnourishment, bruises, and exhaustion.
  • Payments for rooms made in cash or with prepaid credit cards.
  • Requests for extra linens, towels, or room service to accommodate illegal activity.

Despite these red flags, the hotels allegedly failed to take action, enabling traffickers to use their properties as hubs for exploitation.

A Legal Stand for Justice

K.L. is seeking justice for the physical, emotional, and psychological harm she endured. Attorney Ryan P. Dickinson, who is leading the case, emphasized the accountability of the hospitality industry:

“Hotels have a responsibility to ensure their properties do not serve as venues for heinous crimes like sex trafficking. By failing to act, these companies profited from K.L.’s suffering. This lawsuit aims to hold them accountable and secure justice for our client.”

The Role of Hotels in Combatting Trafficking

Hotels provide traffickers with access to private rooms and the anonymity they seek. However, initiatives like industry-specific anti-trafficking training and reporting protocols have been developed to address these risks. But, this lawsuit illustraes the need for such measures to be enforced consistently.

Seeking Accountability Under the TVPRA

The lawsuit leverages the TVPRA, a federal law that allows trafficking survivors to pursue civil damages against those who knowingly benefit from trafficking ventures. This powerful legal tool is instrumental in holding businesses accountable for their complicity in such crimes.
