On November 9, 2021, a former California teacher, soccer coach, and children’s book author has been charged with sexually abusing a former student. The 61-year-old Paul Edward Lowe of Corona, California sexually assaulted the child more than 20 years ago.

The 32-year-old man reported that Lowe was his 4th grade teacher in Riverside, California when he was abused. He told authorities that most of the abuse occurred off campus, however, some occasions of abuse did occur at the school.

For years, Lowe worked with children. Lowe taught at Taft Elementary School in Riverside from 1997 through 2002 when he suddenly resigned. Lowe also worked for the YMCA, as a youth soccer coach in both Los Angeles County and Big Bear, 2 years as a private school teacher in Hacienda Heights in the early 1990s, within a youth camp, and even wrote children’s books under the name “Edric Phoenix.”

It is reported that the Riverside Police Department Sexual Assault – Child Abuse Unit (SACA) began investigating Lowe in September of this year. Lowe had previously been convicted of sexual assault of a minor occurring in Los Angeles County, for which he had to register as a sex offender. It is believed that Lowe’s abrupt resignation from Taft in 2002 was due to this conviction.

Lowe is currently being held on $5 million bail and is scheduled to be in court next on December 3, 2021. Due to Lowe’s decades-long immersion in the lives, activities, and institutions entrusted with the care of children, it is believed that other children have been victimized. The Riverside Police Department has asked that if anyone has information or wants to report an incident involving Lowe, to call Detective Stacie Ontko at (951) 353-7171 or email at sontko@riversideca.gov.

Similar cases of sexual abuse have not only resulted in criminal convictions but also civil judgments. It is important that victims receive justice and those who are responsible are held accountable to the full extent of the law.

It is not uncommon for perpetrators of child sexual abuse to abuse multiple victims and it is expected that more victims of Lowe’s abuse exist and have yet to come forward.
