Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Rev. William Malone

Perpetrators

In a recent and troubling revelation, the Diocese of St. Augustine has acknowledged credible allegations of sexual abuse against the late Rev. William Malone. Two survivors have come forward, detailing incidents in the 1980s when Malone served as an associate pastor at Sacred Heart Parish in Jacksonville. This unsettling revelation has ignited a comprehensive investigation, bringing to light a painful chapter that victims have carried for decades.

About Rev. William Malone:

Rev. William Malone served as an associate pastor at Sacred Heart Parish from 1982 to 1991. He died in 2003. The accusations emerged following Bishop Felipe Estévez’s letter discussing a Pennsylvania grand jury’s investigation into sex abuse. The diocese, dedicated to transparency and accountability, promptly initiated an investigation upon receiving the allegations.

Aside from Sacred Heart Parish, Malone also served as an associate pastor at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Palm Coast from 1991 to 1992. Following his tenure in Florida, he moved to the Holy Ghost Fathers community in Long Island, N.Y., in March 1992. In September 1993, Malone returned to the Ireland Province of the Holy Ghost Fathers, where he remained until his death.

Investigation Process:

The diocese enlisted the services of a former Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office detective to investigate the claims. The findings were then presented to an independent review board, and the report was shared with local law enforcement.

Bishop Felipe Estévez, acknowledging the gravity of the situation, personally met with one of the victims to express deep sorrow and extend a heartfelt apology on behalf of the church. The diocese is committed to providing support and counseling to survivors who may have similar accounts of abuse. The focus is on reaching out pastorally and ensuring those affected’s emotional and psychological well-being.

Statewide Investigation:

In response to these allegations, the Office of the Attorney General launched a statewide investigation into potential sexual abuse at the seven dioceses in Florida. The investigation is currently active and ongoing, with the state office encouraging the reporting of tips via phone or online.

The revelation of sexual abuse allegations against Rev. William Malone is a solemn reminder of the need for transparency, accountability, and support for survivors. We encourage anyone impacted by this church or priest to come forward at 1-866-311-8640.
