Dr. Richard B. Tancer, DO, a longtime family physician in New Jersey, has been accused of sexually assaulting a patient during an appointment at his office in Little Ferry, NJ.
Tancer, 68, was arrested on Friday, July 18, 2025, at his home in Montville, NJ, following an investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Little Ferry Police Department. He has been charged with two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual contact. The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office announced that he “was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending a first appearance in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack, NJ.”
Allegations from an Examination
A female patient reported that during an examination on July 18 at Family Medical Group in Little Ferry, Dr. Tancer touched her inappropriately and pressed himself against her right knee. The incident was reported the same day, and the Little Ferry Police contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office to initiate an investigation.

A Decades-Long Career Now Clouded by Criminal Charges
According to his Healthgrades profile, Dr. Tancer has over four decades of medical experience. He graduated from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1984 and is a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO). DOs are licensed physicians who receive additional training in osteopathic principles, which emphasize a whole-body approach to care and include a hands-on technique called osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT).
Family Medical Group, the location of the alleged crime, is listed on Google as “Richard Tancer, DO.” Tancer is also affiliated with Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, NJ.
As a longtime physician, Tancer worked closely with individuals and families in a role that typically involves significant patient trust. Given the nature of the allegations and the length of his career, there may be other individuals with similar experiences who have not yet come forward.
