Pursuing Justice for Survivors of Sovereign Grace Ministries Abuse

For decades, the Sovereign Grace Ministries (SGM) network was hailed as a model of evangelical leadership. However, it concealed a harrowing truth: a pattern of child sexual abuse and systemic cover-ups that devastated countless lives. The 2016 Washingtonian exposé by Tiffany Stanley revealed the stories of survivors. They endured not only the trauma of abuse but also the betrayal of a church that prioritized its reputation over their safety.

At Andreozzi + Foote, we stand with these survivors. Our firm is committed to representing victims of SGM-related abuse. We actively encourage others to come forward. We believe every survivor deserves justice. And, we are here to help navigate the legal avenues available to hold perpetrators and enablers accountable.

A Legacy of Betrayal

The allegations against SGM are not isolated incidents but part of a disturbing pattern. Reports indicate that church leaders, including founder C.J. Mahaney, failed to report abuse to authorities. Instead, they handled matters internally. Leaders often pressured victims to forgive their abusers without proper intervention.

One case involved a young girl who a church member molested molested. When her mother reported the abuse, she was advised by church leadership not to contact the police. Instead, the victim was forced to confront her abuser and offer forgiveness—a response that prioritized the institution’s image over the child’s well-being.

The Path to Justice

Legal challenges have historically impeded survivors’ quests for justice. Statutes of limitations often prevent civil justice. However, recent legislative changes, such as Maryland’s Child Victims Act (CVA), have opened new avenues for legal recourse.

At Andreozzi + Foote, we leverage these legal developments to assist survivors in holding SGM accountable. Our team is dedicated to providing compassionate and comprehensive legal support to those seeking justice.

The Maryland Child Victims Act: A Critical Deadline Approaches

Maryland enacted the Child Victims Act in 2023. It eliminated the statute of limitations for civil lawsuits. This legislative change empowered countless survivors to seek justice, regardless of when the abuse occurred.

However, recent amendments to the Act have introduced new limitations that will take effect on June 1, 2025. These changes include a substantial reduction in the maximum damages survivors can recover:

  • Public Institutions: The cap will decrease from $890,000 to $400,000.
  • Private Institutions: The cap will decrease from $1.5 million to $700,000.

Additionally, the amendments stipulate that survivors will be limited to a single claim. This limitation applies regardless of the number of abuse incidents. Furthermore, attorneys’ fees will be capped at 20% for out-of-court settlements and 25% for cases resolved through court judgments.

These impending changes underscore the urgency for survivors to take action. To ensure the opportunity to pursue claims under the current, more favorable terms, survivors must file their lawsuits by May 31, 2025
