Dr. Jed Bindrup Charged in Sexual Abuse Case
A Utah plastic surgeon is facing serious felony charges after a former employee accused him of repeated sexual abuse over several years, according to court records and local reporting.
According to court documents filed in Salt Lake County on April 2, 2026, Dr. Jed Reed Bindrup has been charged with two counts of object rape, a first-degree felony, and four counts of forcible sexual abuse, a second-degree felony.
The charges stem from alleged conduct occurring from approximately September 2020 to August 2024.
Prosecutors have requested that he be held without bail, citing the serious nature of the allegations and alleging that he would pose a danger to others in the community if released.
His first court appearance is scheduled for Friday, April 10, 2026.
Allegations Detailed in Criminal Complaint
Court documents outline allegations made by a former employee, who reported approximately ten incidents that occurred over a four-year period.
The victim “reported that on or about September 13, 2020, she was on a trailhead when her boss, [Bindrup], approached her from behind and touched her breasts and butt over the clothes. The victim said she pushed him off and told him to leave.” The victim reported that this was the only incident that happened outside of the workplace, and the next day, Bindrup apologized to her.
The filing outlines additional allegations made by the victim, including incidents that reportedly occurred in the workplace, often in the defendant’s office. The employee reported repeated abuse over time, stating that she told him “no” on multiple occasions. The victim reported that “he also touched her butt often, and sometimes in front of co-workers.”
Investigators also noted that “multiple employees reported that Bindrup would often seek the [victim] out, and she was often in his office.
According to court documents, “Bindrup admitted that [the victim] would ‘meet with him in his office’ approximately once a month but denied any sexual contact. Bindrup also stated that he had seen [the victim] on a trailhead.”
Investigators wrote in the motion for pretrial detention, “The defendant often called the victim into his office, despite not needing anything, or would purposefully move her bag into his office in order to make her be in his office.”
According to court documents, the victim was ultimately terminated from the surgical center and believed the termination was retaliatory, stemming from her continued rejection of the alleged conduct, which was reportedly treated as insubordination.

He has maintained a long-standing presence in the plastic surgery community, holding a position of authority and trust over the course of several decades.
Allegations Involving Abuse of Power
The allegations in this case raise serious concerns about power dynamics within professional environments.
According to the complaint, Dr. Bindrup was both the victim’s employer and the owner of the business, placing him in a position of significant authority and control.
Workplace environments like this can create substantial barriers for victims. When the accused controls employment status, individuals may fear retaliation or termination if they report abuse.
Investigators emphasized this dynamic, writing that the defendant “used his position of trust, as the victim’s boss and the owner of the business, to prey upon the victim, who was an employee.”
Potential Civil Liability and Legal Options for Survivors
When allegations involve a physician operating within a medical practice, both the individual provider and the practice itself may face civil liability. Healthcare providers and the organizations in which they operate have a legal duty to maintain safe environments for both employees and staff. When that duty is not upheld, questions about accountability and institutional responsibility can arise.
In some cases, physicians who own their own practices may operate with significant autonomy and limited oversight. When appropriate safeguards are not in place, this lack of accountability can create conditions where abuse goes unchecked. However, ownership does not shield individuals or organizations from responsibility.
Survivors of sexual abuse may have the right to pursue civil legal action. These claims may be brought against both the individual physician and the medical practice, and can seek compensation for the emotional, financial, and psychological impact of the abuse, including the profound breach of trust that occurs when a medical provider exploits their position.
Civil claims can also help uncover systemic failures and bring attention to conditions that allowed the abuse to occur, while also helping to prevent similar harm in the future.
