  • Illinois coach and teacher John “Jake” Wakey is under investigation for alleged sexual abuse involving a former student
  • Law enforcement has issued subpoenas for records related to Wakey and multiple former students
  • Officials believe there may be multiple victims
  • Wakey previously had a disciplinary record involving inappropriate conduct with students
  • The case raises serious concerns about institutional oversight and missed warning signs

Ongoing Investigation Into Carterville Coach

John “Jake” Wakey, a longtime teacher and assistant football coach at Carterville High School in Illinois, is at the center of an ongoing criminal sexual abuse investigation involving a former student.

The investigation began after a former student came forward, alleging abuse that reportedly occurred years earlier. Law enforcement has since escalated the case, issuing subpoenas for Wakey’s personnel file and records tied to at least 17 former students.

Authorities have also indicated they have received numerous additional tips, and investigators believe there may be multiple victims connected to this case.

Wakey has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues. At this time, no criminal charges have been filed, and the investigation remains active.

A History of Concerning Conduct

What makes this case particularly alarming is that the allegations do not exist in a vacuum.

Records show that Wakey was disciplined by the school district in 2009 for inappropriate behavior involving students. That discipline included:

  • Inappropriate texting with students
  • Allowing students to spend time at his home unsupervised
  • Drinking in front of students
  • Transport-related concerns while supervising student athletes

He was suspended for 10 days without pay but remained employed by the district.

Even more concerning, Wakey had a prior misdemeanor conviction for providing alcohol to minors before joining the district in 2003.

Despite these warning signs, he continued working in a position of authority over students for more than two decades.

Delayed Response Raises Serious Questions

Reports indicate that an FBI tip was received in 2024 alleging inappropriate sexual conduct involving a student, but the school district did not initiate an internal investigation at that time, citing insufficient information.

It was not until February 2026, when a former student formally came forward, that the situation escalated into a criminal investigation, and Wakey was placed on leave.

In the interim, the district reportedly received additional anonymous complaints and reports of inappropriate messaging, raising serious concerns about whether earlier intervention could have prevented further harm.

The Bigger Issue: Institutional Accountability

Cases like this highlight a deeply troubling and recurring reality:

Warning signs are often present but not acted upon.

When schools and institutions fail to:

  • Take prior discipline seriously
  • Investigate patterns of boundary violations
  • Respond aggressively to early complaints

They create environments where abuse can continue unchecked.

Boundary violations like private texting, unsupervised access, or overly familiar relationships are not minor issues. They are often precursors to grooming and abuse.

And when those behaviors are documented and ignored, institutions may be civilly liable for the resulting harm.

Survivors Deserve to Be Heard

For survivors, coming forward, especially years later, is incredibly difficult. The delay in reporting does not diminish the truth of their experiences. In fact, it often reflects the realities of trauma, fear, and power dynamics.

This case underscores why civil litigation is so critical.

Even when criminal charges are delayed or never filed, survivors still have the right to:

  • Seek accountability
  • Expose institutional failures
  • Prevent future harm to others
