Who Can Be Held Liable in a Sexual Abuse Case?

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

The parties that can be held liable in a sex abuse case include the perpetrator of the abuse, but also, and I think more importantly for people who contact our law firm, the institution that may have enabled or allowed the abuse to occur. And that’s typically, institutions like churches or schools. Really, any youth-serving organization that allows access to kids. If they don’t do the right thing in terms of protecting the kids under their care, then they can be liable for allowing the abuse. And you know, a lot of times our clients come to us after their perpetrator may have been prosecuted, maybe the offender has gone to prison, but typically nobody from the institution is held accountable until we get involved.
