Johnson City Doctor Arrested for Rape and Sexual Battery
Dr. Atif Atyia, a 68-year-old physician of Jonesborough, was arrested in March 2025 after a patient reported being raped during a medical visit. Johnson City police charged him with aggravated rape and three counts of sexual battery. The arrest followed an investigation by the Johnson City Police Department’s Special Victims Unit, including a search of Dr. Atyia’s office on West Market Street. He was later released on bond and is scheduled to appear in court on June 16th, 2025.
Dr. Atif Atyia Previously Reprimanded Over Pregnant Patient’s Emergency Visit
In 2021, both the Tennessee and Virginia medical boards reprimanded Dr. Atyia for unprofessional conduct involving a 20-year-old pregnant patient. In 2020, she sought emergency care for abdominal pain.
Records show Dr. Atyia failed to perform a pelvic exam, falsely charted a fetal heart rate, and neglected to order a fetal heart monitor, and discharged her after a brief visit. The patient delivered her baby in a hospital parking lot shortly afterward; the child did not survive.
Virginia suspended his medical license for three months. After completing a board-ordered obstetrics education course, Dr. Atyia was allowed to resume practicing medicine without restrictions.
Civil Action Underway Against Dr. Atyia
Andreozzi + Foote is currently representing another survivor of Dr. Atif Atyia. This story highlights a broader truth: patients are in a vulnerable position when receiving medical care, and sadly, some doctors exploit that trust for their own gain. If Doctor’s Care, the urgent care where Dr Atif Atyia practiced, knew about his sexual misconduct and failed to act, they could be held liable for enabling the abuse to continue.
Our firm has extensive experience pursuing civil litigation against hospitals and
healthcare facilities that fail to protect patients. We are committed to holding negligent individuals and institutions accountable and helping survivors seek justice.
