A Florida substitute teacher has been arrested after multiple middle school students reported inappropriate conduct in the classroom. This prompted a criminal investigation and raised questions about how temporary school staff is vetted and supervised.

Emmanuel Sanchez, 32, of Lakeland, Florida, was arrested by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and charged with lewd and lascivious conduct involving a minor, a second-degree felony under Florida law.

Authorities say the allegations involve sexual abuse toward students at two Polk County middle schools. Sanchez was working as a substitute teacher at these schools.

Substitute Teacher Employed Through Staffing Agency

According to investigators, Sanchez was not directly employed by the school district. Instead, he worked as a temporary substitute teacher through the staffing agency Kelly Services. This agency provides substitute personnel to school districts.

Cases like this highlight a growing concern in many school systems across the country. Substitute teachers and other temporary staff often work through third-party vendors. This raises questions about screening, training, and oversight.

While school districts may rely on staffing agencies to fill classroom gaps, those systems must still prioritize student safety and accountability.

Allegations From Multiple Students

The investigation began on February 25, 2026. On that date, a 13-year-old student at Kathleen Middle School reported that the substitute teacher sat next to her in class, pressed his thigh against hers, and rubbed her thigh while making comments about her appearance.

Detectives interviewed several other students who were present in the classroom at the time. In addition, authorities say their statements supported the student’s account

During the ongoing investigation, two additional students from Lake Gibson Middle School also reported inappropriate behavior involving Sanchez.

The students told investigators that Sanchez made inappropriate comments and engaged in inappropriate touching. Two other students reported observing Sanchez visibly aroused in the classroom around other students.

Authorities say Sanchez introduced himself to students using the name “Mr. Jeremiah.”

Arrest and Ongoing Investigation

Detectives contacted Sanchez at his Lakeland home on March 6, 2026. During that interaction, investigators say he acknowledged details about the classroom incident described by the female student. However, he denied touching her and denied the allegations involving the male students.

He was subsequently arrested and charged with lewd and lascivious conduct on a minor

The investigation remains active, and authorities have encouraged other students to come forward if they experienced or witnessed inappropriate conduct.

School District Response

Polk County Public Schools confirmed that Sanchez will no longer serve as a substitute teacher or work in any capacity within district schools

Local officials emphasized that protecting students must remain the top priority. They added that school systems must cooperate fully with law enforcement when allegations of misconduct arise.

Abuse Risks in Substitute Teaching Roles

Cases involving substitute teachers are particularly concerning because substitutes often move among multiple schools and classrooms. Therefore, they interact with large numbers of students in a short period.

When allegations arise, investigators must determine whether:

  • Other students may have experienced similar conduct
  • School administrators or staff noticed warning signs
  • Policies were in place to prevent or report misconduct
  • Background screening and training were sufficient

School districts and staffing agencies both play a role in ensuring that individuals placed in classrooms are properly vetted, trained, and monitored.
