Key Takeaways

  • Kayla Renee Salcido faces multiple felony sex abuse charges in New Mexico.
  • The charges stem from alleged abuse involving a juvenile patient receiving treatment at Mesilla Valley Hospital in Las Cruces.
  • In addition to the criminal case, civil investigations may examine whether Mesilla Valley Hospital failed to implement safeguards designed to protect patients.

Kayla Renee Salcido Arrested

According to court records, Kayla Renee Salcido, 26, was arrested on March 5, 2026, and charged in Doña Ana County Magistrate Court in Las Cruces, New Mexico, in connection with the alleged sexual abuse of a juvenile patient receiving treatment at Mesilla Valley Hospital, a behavioral healthcare facility where she worked.

According to the court records, Salcido faces seven felony charges:

  • Three counts of Criminal Sexual Penetration in the Second Degree (Child 13–18) (Force or Coercion)
  • One count of Criminal Sexual Contact of a Minor in the Second Degree (Person in Position of Authority) (Unclothed) (Child 13-18)
  • Three counts of Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor

Details in the Arrest Affidavit

“According to a statement of probable cause filed in the case, the hospital’s nursing director reported that a juvenile male patient disclosed he had been sexually assaulted by a nurse who worked at the hospital.” (Organ Mountain News) The individual was later identified by investigators as Salcido.

The victim told investigators that he met Salcido while he was being treated at the hospital and she was one of his nurses. Investigators alleged that Salcido showed the patient nude photographs of herself on her phone, added him on Instagram, and kissed him.

The complaint further alleges that after the patient was discharged, Salcido picked him up near the hospital and drove him to her apartment.

The affidavit states that Salcido and the victim consumed alcohol before she sexually assaulted him multiple times, stopping only when she said guests were expected to arrive. She then allegedly drove the patient back near Mesilla Valley Hospital and he was readmitted. According to court records, he learned the following day that Salcido had resigned from her position at the facility.

According to Organ Mountain News, “The affidavit states the discovery left him feeling depressed and ‘used,’ prompting him to confide in a hospital staff member. The disclosure was then reported to law enforcement, triggering the investigation.”

Questions About Salcido’s Role

Media reports describe Salcido as a nurse at Mesilla Valley Hospital. However, a search of a national nursing licensure and disciplinary database did not reveal a record for Salcido. It is possible that she worked in another patient-care role at the facility, such as a care technician or other behavioral health staff member.

Regardless of job title, employees who work directly with patients in healthcare settings are expected to maintain strict professional boundaries. Behavioral health facilities often treat individuals who may be experiencing significant emotional or psychological distress, and patients rely on staff members for supervision, care, and support during treatment.

When someone entrusted with a patient’s care is accused of sexual abuse, the  allegations raise serious concerns about patient safety and whether adequate safeguards were in place to protect those receiving treatment.

Prior Lawsuit Against Mesilla Valley Hospital

A prior lawsuit has also raised questions about patient safety practices at Mesilla Valley Hospital.

In August 2025, a lawsuit was filed alleging that a teen patient was sexually abused while attending court-ordered behavioral health treatment at Mesilla Valley Hospital in Las Cruces.

According to the complaint, the alleged abuse occurred between 2005 and 2006, when the victim, then a minor, was required to attend counseling at the facility as part of a court-ordered program.

According to NM News, “The therapy counseling reportedly started out ‘normal,’ but the counselor or psychotherapist assigned to provide the sessions soon began making lewd comments that escalated to outright sexual assault. According to the complaint, the counselor told the victim that if he ever exposed the abuse, he would be sent back to jail and his family would be harmed.

The lawsuit alleges that inadequate supervision, poor decision-making and unsafe practices at Mesilla Valley allowed the assault to happen. It accuses the hospital of systemic problems in staffing, training and oversight. It also claims that the hospital lacked sufficient policies to prevent harm and failed to monitor employees and ensure patient safety.”

Included in the suit is also a claim of corporate negligence, “which focuses on the institution’s broader responsibilities for patient safety.”

Can I Sue Mesilla Valley Hospital?

The prior lawsuit involving Mesilla Valley Hospital highlights how civil litigation can examine the role an institution may have played in allowing abuse to occur.

While criminal cases focus on whether an individual violated the law, civil lawsuits may examine whether institutions failed to implement safeguards designed to protect patients. In cases involving healthcare or behavioral health facilities, civil investigations may explore whether the facility conducted appropriate background checks, adequately supervised staff interacting with patients, and responded appropriately to complaints or warning signs.

Ultimately, facilities may face civil liability if they fail to protect the patients in their care. Civil cases give survivors the opportunity to pursue compensation for costs tied to recovery. They also expose systemic failures and can drive reforms to better protect patients in the future.
