A Detroit nurse, Wilfredo Figueroa-Berrios, 47, is facing multiple criminal sexual conduct charges after prosecutors say he sexually assaulted women in two separate incidents, including one involving a victim at Detroit Medical Center Sinai-Grace Hospital. Authorities believe more victims may exist and are investigating other cases in connection to the nurse.

Charges Against Figueroa-Berrios

Charges were first filed on August 27, 2025, in connection with an alleged assault that occurred at Sinai-Grace Hospital on August 18, where Figueroa-Berrios was employed as a nurse. Court testimony revealed that the victim was at the hospital due to alcohol intoxication. He was charged with three counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct in this case.

He was arraigned and granted a $50,000 personal bond with conditions that include a GPS tether and no contact with the victim. Licensed as a nurse since 2012, Figueroa-Berrios was placed on leave from the hospital following the allegations. The hospital has yet to publicly comment on this case.

On August 30, 2025, prosecutors filed separate charges of criminal sexual conduct in the third degree and a misdemeanor charge of criminal sexual conduct in the fourth degree against the nurse. According to the Detroit Police Department and the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office,  Figueroa-Berrios allegedly forced himself into a porta-potty outside Detroit’s 47 East Adams Street and assaulted a 41-year-old woman on May 9, 2025.

Originally a $100,000 cash/surety bond, his bond in this case has been lowered “$100,000/10% with a GPS tether and a curfew of 10:00pm to 6:00am,” according to a Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office press release.

According to the release, his Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for September 15, 2025, and his Preliminary Examination is scheduled for September 22, 2025.

Assistant Prosecutor Grace Broughton believes that “he is a threat to the community.”

Prior History

This is not the first time Figueroa-Berrios has been investigated for alleged sexual misconduct. According to reporting by WXYZ, in 2021, Livonia police officers requested charges “for criminal sexual conduct in 2021 for a 2020 incident, but they were denied due to insufficient evidence. Charges were requested again in February 2022 for a 2021 incident.”

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office is reviewing this case as well. Additional reporting by WXYZ determined that these allegations include those at a clinic.

“We have at least four more pending cases [involving Figueroa-Berrios] that I am personally reviewing,” said Broughton

Although these earlier reports did not lead to charges, they raise questions about what institutions employing Figueroa-Berrios knew and how they responded.

Survivor Advocacy

The charges against Figueroa-Berrios have drawn attention from survivor advocate Jojo Dries.  Dries, herself an abuse survivor, noted that abusers often exploit positions of power that make them appear safe.

She also emphasized that abuse is perpetuated when survivors aren’t believed.

“‘I think the major reason these abusers are allowed to continue doing these types of things is that the first time they are reported, people don’t believe them,’” Dries told WXYZ

Duty of Care

Hospitals carry a profound duty to safeguard the people who come to them for treatment. That responsibility includes careful hiring and background checks, proper supervision of staff, and strict adherence to mandatory reporting requirements when misconduct is suspected.

For survivors, abuse in a healthcare setting is a deep betrayal of the safety they were promised. Instead of finding healing, they experience trauma at the hands of someone entrusted with their care, which can make it difficult to ever feel safe seeking medical treatment again.

Civil Justice for Survivors

While criminal charges seek to punish offenders, they do not provide survivors with the resources needed for recovery, nor do they hold institutions accountable for systemic failures. Civil lawsuits allow survivors to pursue financial support for therapy and recovery, while also exposing institutional failures and pushing for stronger safeguards in the future.
