  • Ryan Wolstoncroft was sentenced to 36 years in prison for sexually abusing a boy connected to his church community.
  • The abuse occurred over several years, starting when the child was about 11 years old, primarily within a trusted church environment.
  • Investigations suggest there may be additional survivors of abuse involving Ryan Wolstoncroft and potential lapses in church oversight.

  • Victims of abuse in these contexts may hold both emotional and spiritual trauma, impacting their relationships and trust.

A Washington County, Pennsylvania man convicted of sexually abusing a child over a period of years is now serving a lengthy state prison sentence after a jury found him guilty following a criminal trial.

Ryan Wolstoncroft, of Cecil Township, Pennsylvania, was sentenced in March 2026 to 36 years in prison after being convicted on multiple charges related to the sexual abuse of a minor boy. According to public reporting, the abuse occurred over an extended period of time and began when the child was approximately 11 years old.

The survivor, who we are representing and whose identity is being withheld for privacy reasons, was a child connected to the same church community attended by Wolstoncroft and his family.

Abuse Allegedly Occurred Within Trusted Church Relationships

According to information developed through the criminal proceedings and subsequent civil investigation, the survivor’s family met Ryan Wolstoncroft and his relatives through Bethany Presbyterian Church in Cecil, Pennsylvania around 2015 or 2016.

Bethany Presbyterian Church is a member congregation within the Pittsburgh Presbytery and the Presbyterian Church (USA) denomination structure.

The abuse reportedly occurred between approximately 2019 and late 2020, during a period when the survivor was still a young child. Prosecutors presented evidence during trial that led to Wolstoncroft’s conviction on charges connected to the abuse of the child victim.

Authorities first charged Wolstoncroft after a grand jury investigation. A jury later convicted him, and the court imposed a lengthy prison sentence reflecting the seriousness of the offenses.

Church and Family Connections Raise Accountability Questions

Public records and witness testimony have highlighted the extensive involvement of the Wolstoncroft family within Bethany Presbyterian Church.

Ryan Wolstoncroft reportedly volunteered in various church-related capacities over the years. His brother, Mark Wolstoncroft, served as church treasurer, while Mark’s wife reportedly served as youth director within the church community.

Following public disclosure of the allegations, Bethany Presbyterian Church released a public statement acknowledging that Ryan Wolstoncroft had volunteered within the church, while asserting he was not employed by the church or formally involved in children’s programming.

However, civil investigations involving churches and youth-serving institutions often examine not only formal titles, but also the practical access, trust, and authority individuals may have developed within religious communities over time.

Additional Survivors May Exist

Information connected to the criminal proceedings suggests that additional individuals may have experienced abuse involving Ryan Wolstoncroft.

Witness testimony presented during the criminal trial reportedly included allegations involving other children connected to the church community. Some individuals have allegedly come forward publicly, while others may still be unwilling or emotionally unable to discuss what occurred.

It is common for survivors of childhood sexual abuse to delay disclosure for years due to trauma, fear, shame, confusion, or concerns about disrupting family, church, or community relationships.

Many survivors struggle with whether they will be believed, especially when abuse involves trusted community members or faith-based environments.

Religious Institutions Can Create Unique Grooming Dynamics

Cases involving abuse connected to churches or faith communities frequently involve grooming behaviors that develop gradually over time.

Offenders often:

  • Build trust with families and children
  • Increase access through volunteer or mentoring roles
  • Present themselves as safe and dependable community members
  • Use church relationships to lower suspicion
  • Exploit the culture of trust often present within religious communities

Survivors abused within faith communities frequently experience both emotional trauma and spiritual trauma. Many struggle with long-term impacts involving trust, identity, relationships, mental health, and connection to religion or community.

Civil Investigations May Examine Institutional Oversight

Civil cases involving church-related abuse often examine whether institutions and affiliated entities failed to recognize warning signs, supervise volunteers appropriately, or implement safeguards designed to protect children.

Potential issues in church abuse litigation may include:

  • Volunteer screening and oversight
  • Child protection policies
  • Reporting and response procedures
  • Supervision of adults with access to minors
  • Institutional awareness of concerning conduct
  • Denominational oversight structures

Religious organizations that serve children and families have a responsibility to create safe environments and respond appropriately to allegations or warning signs involving abuse.
