Who Was Father Louis Diogo?
Father Louis Diogo was a priest of the Diocese of Providence who served in Rhode Island for nearly four decades.
From the Azores, Diogo was ordained on June 23, 1946, and arrived in the United States in 1954 to serve in the Diocese of Providence.
Diogo retired in 1993 after a woman reported to the Diocese that he had sexually abused her and her sister during the 1950s and 1960s. He denied the allegations. Although he was never criminally charged because the allegations were outside the statute of limitations, the Diocese determined that the complainant was credible.
In 2005, the Diocese learned that Diogo had returned to Rhode Island and was publicly celebrating Mass. Church officials then restricted his faculties.
According to the AG’s Report, “The Diocese received the third and fourth complaints against Diogo in March 2006. In response, the Diocese reminded Diogo that his faculties were restricted to private mass and declined to take further action on the basis that Diogo was, by that point, 85-years-old. It does not appear that the Diocese ever reported either complaint to law enforcement. In 2024, State Police attempted to contact all four complainants. They discovered that two are deceased, and they were unable to reach the other two.”
Diogo died on April 4, 2015. He is included on the Diocese of Providence’s List of Credibly Accused Clergy and the Rhode Island Attorney General’s 2026 Report.

Handling of Allegations Against Father Louis Diogo
The Diocese of Providence received the first complaint against Diogo in February 1993. According to the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Report, church officials were also, around the same time, contacted by a local reporter who was preparing a story about the allegations and informed the Diocese that Diogo had “apparently admitted to the allegations in a recorded telephone conversation with the victim.” Diogo denied sexually abusing the complainants but reportedly acknowledged that he may have “‘possibly touched them in ways they are now interpreting badly.’”
Shortly thereafter, Bishop Louis Gelineau arranged for Diogo to retire from St. Elizabeth Church in Bristol. The Attorney General’s Report states that diocesan officials assisted Diogo in preparing a public statement describing the allegations as “false rumors.” The news story ultimately did not air, and Diogo later began the process of retiring from ministry.
According to the AG’s Report, “Upon his ‘retirement,’ Diogo was appointed ‘pastor emeritus’ of St. Elizabeth, apparently with no restrictions on his ministry.”
