Unfortunately, the rise of AI image-generation tools has enabled new ways of misusing a person’s likeness. AI-generated sexual abuse often happens without a victim’s knowledge and begins with an everyday photo that was innocently shared online or on social media. When deepfakes are generated, the experience can be overwhelming for victims and their families, and raise serious concerns about safety, privacy, and long-term impact. These concerns are often compounded when a child is involved.
Particularly troubling is the use of technology and social media platforms, like Grok AI, to generate sexual abuse material. Victims and their families are now coming forward to file lawsuits against companies responsible for the technology enabling the creation of explicit material. If you or a loved one has been affected, contact Andreozzi + Foote for a free consultation with a Grok AI deepfake lawyer to learn about your legal options.
“Artificial intelligence may have changed how sexual exploitation occurs, but it has not changed the devastating impact these violations have on children and families. Companies that create powerful technologies must take reasonable steps to prevent foreseeable harm, especially when children are at risk.”

What Is AI-Generated Child Sexual Abuse Material?
AI-generated child sexual abuse material, or CSAM, consists of images or videos in which AI tools are used to create, alter, or manipulate content to depict a child in a sexually explicit manner.
In many cases, the explicit content is created from ordinary photos or videos, such as school pictures or images shared on social media, without the victim’s knowledge or consent. Sexual predators, online bad actors, or even the victim’s peers may create and distribute this material.
AI-generated child sexual abuse material may also be referred to as deepfakes or synthetic media. Regardless of how it is labeled, this type of content is illegal. Although the images or videos may be created using AI rather than through direct physical abuse, the harm to the child is real and can have lasting emotional, social, and psychological effects.
Understanding the Allegations Against Grok AI Over Deepfake Abuse
Grok AI is a chatbot developed and operated by xAI, an artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk. Users can access Grok through its standalone platform and through X, formerly Twitter. While the chatbot can perform tasks such as web searches and file analysis, it has drawn scrutiny for its ability to generate images and short videos.
Multiple lawsuits have emerged in response to content allegedly generated using Grok. Among them is a proposed class action lawsuit filed in March 2026 by three minor girls. The lawsuit alleges that xAI profited from and promoted technology capable of generating sexually explicit content depicting real individuals, including children.
According to The New York Times, Grok generated and posted 4.4 million images during nine days beginning in late December 2025. The report estimated that about 65% of those images contained sexualized depictions of men, women, and children.
How AI-Generated Sexual Abuse Happens
AI-generated sexual abuse often starts with a seemingly innocent photo. Using AI tools, individuals can manipulate existing images to create sexually explicit content and distribute it online without the victim’s knowledge.
The following examples demonstrate how this type of abuse frequently occurs:
- Children’s school photos, photos from social media accounts, and other publicly available images are uploaded to an AI platform, such as Grok AI.
- Deepfake sexual content is generated without the victim’s knowledge or consent.
- AI-generated images are shared through text messages, social media, online forums, or other digital platforms.
- Individuals use AI-generated content to harass, intimidate, coerce, or extort victims.
Because these images can be generated from ordinary photographs, victims often remain unaware of the abuse until others discover the content.
How AI-Generated Sexual Abuse Causes Real Harm to Victims
Victims of AI-generated sexual abuse content can experience many of the same effects associated with other forms of sexual exploitation and image-based abuse. Potential impacts include:
- Emotional trauma and feelings of violation
- Anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges
- Reputational damage within schools, workplaces, or communities
- Social isolation and withdrawal from friends or activities
- School-related difficulties, including declining performance or absenteeism
- Fear that the images will continue to be shared or rediscovered
- Loss of privacy and a sense of personal security
- Long-term psychological harm that may require ongoing support
Can AI Companies Be Held Responsible for Child Sexual Abuse Material?
Potentially, yes. Whether an AI company can be held legally responsible for AI-generated CSAM depends on the specific facts of the case, the company’s conduct, the design of its technology, and the applicable laws.
Legal arguments that AI companies could potentially face include:
- Product liability: Arguments that the AI system was defectively designed due to foreseeable misuse
- Negligent design: Allegations that reasonable safeguards were not implemented
- Intentional infliction of emotional distress: Allegations that a company’s conduct caused severe emotional suffering
- Consumer protection violations: Allegations of misleading statements about safety or safeguards
- Privacy violations: Allegations involving the misuse of a person’s image, likeness, or identity
- Public nuisance: Claims that the technology contributed to broader public harm
Every case is different, and the strength of any legal claim depends on the specific facts involved. The legal landscape surrounding continues to evolve as courts, lawmakers, and regulators address new forms of AI-related harm.
Potentially Liable Parties in AI-Generated Sexual Abuse Cases
Responsibility in AI-generated sexual abuse cases may involve multiple individuals and organizations, depending on their role in creating, enabling, or distributing harmful content.
Potentially liable parties may include:
- AI developers who design or train systems that can be misused to generate explicit content
- Technology companies that build, market, or commercialize AI tools
- Platform operators that host or distribute user-generated content
- Individuals who create explicit deepfakes using AI tools
- Individuals who share or distribute nonconsensual content
- Organizations or institutions that knowingly facilitate exploitation or fail to address abusive activity on their platforms
Signs Your Child May Be a Victim of AI-Generated Sexual Abuse
AI-generated child sexual abuse material often unfolds in digital spaces that are difficult for parents to see or monitor. Children who are targeted with abuse may not always understand what is happening or feel safe speaking up.
Below are some warning signs to watch for:
- Your child shows noticeable anxiety, distress, or withdrawal after using devices or social media.
- Your child experiences bullying, threats, or exclusion connected to altered or fake images.
- Your child mentions classmates or peers talking about sexualized or altered images involving them.
- Your child receives anonymous or unexplained messages that reference fake, edited, or sexualized photos.
- Teachers, counselors, or school staff reach out with concerns about online harassment or image-based behavior.
- You or your child discovers manipulated or AI-generated images circulating online.
What To Do if You Discover AI-Generated Sexual Images of Yourself or a Loved One
Discovering AI-generated images of you or a loved one online can feel overwhelming and deeply distressing. Taking early, careful steps can help protect safety, limit further spread, and preserve important evidence for any future action. Consider the following steps:
- Preserve evidence: Take screenshots, save images or posts, and capture timestamps, URLs, and any visible account details.
- Avoid engagement: Avoid responding to, arguing with, or engaging the person who shared the content.
- Report content: Use the platform’s reporting tools to request the removal of the images and related accounts.
- Protect safety: If there is any threat, stalking, or escalation, contact law enforcement right away.
- Consult an attorney: Speak with a lawyer experienced in online exploitation or privacy law to understand possible legal options.
- Seek emotional support: Lean on a trusted friend, family member, or organization for help.
