Understanding Statute of Limitations in Sexual Abuse Cases

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

The statute of limitations is an arbitrary time period in which victims of sexual abuse have to come forward. States throughout the country are either extending or eliminating the statute of limitations. One way that they do so is by adopting what is called a window. Window is legislation that allows survivors to come forward and seek justice regardless of their age or when the abuse happened. On average, windows which open up the time period for victims of sexual abuse to seek justice last from one to three years.
