Key Takeaways

  • The Rhode Island Attorney General’s investigation reveals that Catholic priests in the Diocese of Providence sexually abused over 300 children since 1950.
  • At least 75 clergy members are linked to the abuse, but the actual number of victims is likely higher.
  • Many abusive priests were transferred to new assignments instead of being reported to law enforcement, enabling ongoing abuse.
  • Civil litigation plays a key role in holding institutions accountable for their failures in handling abuse allegations.
  • The investigation emphasizes the importance of transparency, support for survivors, and institutional responsibility in cases of abuse.

A sweeping investigation by the Rhode Island Attorney General has revealed that Catholic priests in the Diocese of Providence sexually abused hundreds of children over the course of decades. This exposes what officials described as a long-standing pattern of institutional failure and concealment.

The report, released after a multiyear investigation, found that at least 75 clergy members abused more than 300 children in Rhode Island since 1950. However, investigators believe the true number of victims is likely far higher.

The investigation examined thousands of church records and survivor accounts to document the scope of abuse within the diocese.

Who Is the Catholic Diocese of Providence?

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence oversees Catholic churches, parishes, and institutions throughout the state of Rhode Island.

For decades, the diocese has been responsible for supervising clergy assigned to parishes, schools, and ministries serving children and families. This supervision extended across the state.

The new investigation examined decades of internal diocesan records. It found repeated allegations that priests abused minors while serving in various church roles.

Investigators concluded that dozens of clergy members sexually abused children while working in parishes and Catholic institutions throughout Rhode Island

What Allegations Does the Investigation Reveal?

According to the report released by the Rhode Island Attorney General:

  • At least 75 clergy members were linked to the sexual abuse of more than 300 children since 1950.
  • The investigation determined that the true number of victims is likely higher than the cases identified in the report.
  • Only 20 clergy members were ever criminally charged, and just 14 were convicted

The report also highlighted that many cases never resulted in criminal prosecution due to statutes of limitations, lack of reporting, or internal institutional handling of allegations.

Where Did the Alleged Abuse Occur?

The report found that abuse occurred in Catholic parishes, schools, and church-related environments across Rhode Island over a period of more than seventy years.

Investigators also uncovered evidence that church leaders often moved priests accused of abuse to new assignments rather than removing them from ministry or reporting allegations to law enforcement

In some cases, priests accused of abuse were sent to church-run treatment facilities and later returned to ministry. While there, they continued working with children.

Advocates say these practices allowed abuse to continue for decades and prevented many survivors from obtaining justice.

Potential Civil Liability in Clergy Abuse Cases

While criminal prosecutions focus on punishing individual perpetrators, civil litigation often examines the role of institutions that enabled or concealed abuse.

In clergy abuse cases, civil investigations frequently explore whether church leadership:

  • Failed to report allegations to law enforcement
  • Transferred accused priests to new parishes without warning communities
  • Allowed clergy to remain in ministry after credible accusations
  • Failed to implement adequate safeguards to protect children

Historically, civil lawsuits have revealed internal church documents showing how diocesan officials handled abuse complaints and managed accused priests.

In Rhode Island, the Diocese of Providence has previously paid millions of dollars to settle civil claims brought by survivors of clergy abuse

Civil litigation remains one of the primary avenues through which survivors seek accountability and institutional reform.

Institutional Accountability

Catholic priests occupy positions of profound spiritual authority and trust within their communities.

Families entrust clergy with the care, guidance, and moral leadership of children through religious education, youth programs, and parish life.

When clergy members abuse that trust, the harm extends far beyond individual acts of abuse. Survivors often carry the trauma for decades. Meanwhile, institutions face difficult questions about how allegations were handled and whether additional victims could have been protected.

Investigations like the one in Rhode Island continue to highlight the importance of transparency, survivor support, and institutional accountability.
