As Rhode Island‘s childhood sexual abuse revival window approaches, survivors who were abused at private schools may finally have an opportunity to pursue accountability through the civil justice system. Among the institutions that have publicly acknowledged historical allegations of abuse is Rocky Hill Country Day School. This is an independent school in Warwick, Rhode Island.

Allegations Against Rocky Hill Country Day School

In 2016, Rocky Hill Country Day School informed its community that several alumnae had come forward with allegations of sexual abuse involving the same former faculty member. According to public reports, two former students initially disclosed that they had inappropriate sexual relationships with the teacher while attending the school during the 1970s. Later, after Rocky Hill shared that information with alumni and encouraged others to contact the school, a third former student came forward. She alleged that the faculty member had raped her when she was 16 years old.

According to reporting by NBC 10 News, the women alleged that the abuse occurred while they were students between the ages of 16 and 18. School officials stated that the survivors had not reported the abuse during their time at Rocky Hill. They also stated that the institution first learned of the allegations decades later.

History of Abuse in Rhode Island

The Rocky Hill allegations emerged during a period of increased scrutiny of private educational institutions throughout New England. Survivors from elite schools. Including St. George’s School in Middletown, Rhode Island, began sharing experiences of abuse that had remained hidden for decades. Therefore, these disclosures reinforced what survivors and advocates have long understood. Delayed disclosure is common among survivors of childhood sexual abuse.

Children and adolescents often do not disclose abuse immediately. Unfortunately, feelings of fear, shame, confusion, self-blame, loyalty to trusted adults, and concerns about not being believed can prevent survivors from coming forward until adulthood. For many, it takes years or even decades to understand what happened. In addition, it may take years for survivors to feel safe enough to speak about it.

The allegations involving Rocky Hill also raise broader questions about institutional responsibility. For example, were there warning signs that others observed? Did policies exist to protect students? Did adults recognize inappropriate boundaries? These are often the questions survivors seek to answer when pursuing civil claims against institutions entrusted with the care and education of children.

Rhode Island Opens a New Revival Window for Survivors

Rhode Island‘s newly enacted childhood sexual abuse revival window takes effect on July 1, 2026, and remains open until June 30, 2028. Furthermore, it allows survivors whose claims were previously barred by statutes of limitations to pursue civil lawsuits. Survivors may now bring claims based on the merits of their experiences rather than the passage of time.

The law applies broadly and may permit claims against private schools, religious institutions, youth-serving organizations, camps, and other entities that failed to protect children from abuse.
