Key Takeaways

  • Five employees were injured in a stabbing at the Dos Coyotes Border Cafe inside Thunder Valley Casino Resort near Lincoln, California, on August 19, 2026.
  • Authorities arrested 22-year-old casino employee Joseph Naugle, who was booked on suspicion of attempted murder.
  • The stabbing raises questions about whether the violence could have been reasonably anticipated or prevented.

A Thunder Valley Casino Resort employee is accused of stabbing five coworkers Wednesday evening, August 19, 2026, at the Dos Coyotes Border Cafe inside the casino near Lincoln, California, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office received a report of a possible stabbing around 7 p.m. and said deputies arrived on the scene within minutes.

The suspect, identified by authorities as 22-year-old Joseph Naugle, was seen wearing an apron and was detained while still on casino property, according to KTLA. Naugle, also an employee at the casino, was booked into the South Placer County Jail in Roseville on suspicion of attempted murder, with additional charges pending, according to WKRN.

One of the five victims was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries; the other four were treated at the scene by Thunder Valley Casino EMTs and Cal Fire personnel, according to the Sacramento Bee. Investigators said it appears the suspect knew all five victims, and the sheriff’s office confirmed that no patrons or casino guests were injured or involved in the incident. No additional arrests were made, and authorities said there was no ongoing threat to the public.

A witness having dinner nearby with her son described the panic that followed.

Jarris Lofholm told ABC10 that she heard a scream and initially thought someone had won at the tables until she made eye contact with a casino worker who told her to run. “I haven’t run that fast in a long time,” she said. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive for the attack, and the investigation remained active as of Thursday, August 20.

California employers have a legal obligation to take reasonable steps to prevent foreseeable violence in the workplace. Depending on the facts that emerge, relevant questions in a case like this can include:

  • Whether the casino had any prior knowledge of conflict, threats, or a history of violence involving the suspect
  • Whether adequate background screening was conducted before hiring
  • Whether supervisors or coworkers had reported warning signs that went unaddressed
  • Whether the casino had a workplace violence prevention plan in place, as required under California law for many employers
  • How quickly management and security responded once the altercation began

When an altercation escalates to this level of violence, it’s worth examining whether reasonable precautions could have prevented it.
