Spas operate on a foundation of trust, where clients expect professional care in a safe and respectful environment.
When that trust is broken, as alleged in the case of Andrew Ramirez, it constitutes a serious violation of professional ethics.
Andrew Ramirez, a 42-year-old masseuse from Jefferson, Maryland, was arraigned on May 21st, 2025, on counts of first- and second-degree sexual abuse of a client (Justice.gov), following an alleged assault at the Salamander Hotel Spa in Washington, D.C.
Allegations of Assault During Spa Session
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, government evidence indicates that the incident occurred on July 2, 2023, when a client arrived at the Salamander for a massage. During the session, Ramirez allegedly instructed the client to turn around, causing the towel to fall off. While the client lay on his back with a towel covering his head, Ramirez purportedly sexually assaulted him. The client reported the incident to the hotel staff and contacted 911.
DNA Evidence and Ongoing Criminal Case
Ramirez was arrested on May 20, 2025, after DNA testing and further investigation linked him to the alleged assault. He was arraigned in D.C. Superior Court the following day. A status hearing is currently set for July 11, 2025.
Seeking Information from Other Potential Victims
Authorities are urging anyone who may have been harmed by Andrew Ramirez to come forward. Survivors or those with information can contact the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Sexual Assault Unit at (202) 727-3700.
Questions Surrounding the Hotel
Massage therapists are viewed as trusted professionals. That trust comes with a responsibility both for the individual provider and for the business that employs or contracts them. If the Salamander Hotel failed to properly screen, monitor, or respond to concerns about Ramirez, the hotel could face civil liability. Institutions that enable abuse through negligence can and should be held accountable under civil law.
