Key Takeaways

  • Dr. John Jacob Pisquiy, an orthopedic physician associated with West Virginia University, has been charged after authorities allege he knowingly exposed multiple people to HSV-2, commonly known as genital herpes.
  • Individuals who were knowingly exposed to or infected with HSV-2 by Pisquiy may have grounds to pursue a civil legal claim.

Dr. John Jacob Pisquiy, a 35-year-old orthopedic doctor with West Virginia University’s School of Medicine, is facing criminal charges for allegedly knowingly exposing multiple people to HSV-2, commonly known as genital herpes.

“According to a criminal complaint, on July 10, the Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office received a report claiming that John Jacob Pisquiy, 35, of Morgantown, ‘is a carrier of HSV-2 (Genital Herpes) and has intentionally and knowingly exposed/infected several victims through intimate relations.’” (12 WBOY)

Investigators identified multiple alleged victims who reported being exposed to or contracting herpes through “intimate relations” with Pisquiy over the previous two years, according to local reporting.

What Are the Allegations Against Dr. John Jacob Pisquiy?

Medical records reviewed during the investigation reportedly showed that Pisquiy tested positive for HSV-2 multiple times through different healthcare systems both in April 2025 and in March 2026, according to investigators.

According to local news reports, “witnesses said he ‘intentionally concealed this information’ and ‘consistently denied having the disease when confronted.’”

One woman reportedly told investigators that she contracted herpes during an intimate relationship with Pisquiy that began in January 2026 and that he had never informed her that he had the disease.

Pisquiy has been charged with one count of communication of disease and one count of domestic battery, both misdemeanors. The case was filed on July 30, 2026. He pleaded not guilty to both charges the next day and was released on bond.

Who Is Dr. John Jacob Pisquiy?

Dr. John Jacob Pisquiy specializes in Orthopedic Surgery.

Pisquiy graduated from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in 2020 and initially joined WVU’s emergency medicine residency program. It appears that he later entered WVU’s orthopedic surgery residency program, which his Doximity profile indicates is expected to be completed in 2027.

According to the West Virginia Board of Medicine, Pisquiy holds an active West Virginia medical license, issued in July 2022. As of the time of this writing, no disciplinary action is listed against Pisquiy’s license.

The Board currently lists the WVU Medicine Orthopaedics Department in Morgantown, West Virginia, as his primary practice location.

West Virginia University’s Response to the Allegations

It is unclear what action, if any, West Virginia University or the WVU School of Medicine has taken in response to the allegations against Pisquiy.

West Virginia University provided the following statement to 12 News: “‘We do not comment on personnel matters or issues that occur outside of an employee’s official work responsibilities.’”

Could WVU Be Held Legally Responsible?

Individuals who were knowingly exposed to or infected with HSV-2 without being informed of Pisquiy’s infection status may have grounds to pursue a civil claim. Such a claim could examine when Pisquiy knew of his diagnosis, along with the physical, emotional, and financial harm caused by the exposure or infection.

Publicly available reports do not allege that the reported conduct occurred during medical treatment.

However, the allegations are concerning given Pisquiy’s role as a physician and the significant trust and access doctors have with patients. Any former patients who experienced inappropriate touching, medically unnecessary intimate examinations, sexual comments, or concerning conduct from Pisquiy should make reports to law enforcement and the appropriate medical licensing authorities.

If concerns involving patients emerge, a civil investigation can also examine whether WVU took reasonable steps to protect patients. This could include whether previous complaints or warning signs existed, whether Pisquiy was appropriately supervised, and whether appropriate patient-safeguards were in place.

Whether Pisquiy or WVU could bear civil liability would depend on the specific facts and circumstances of each case.
