Dr. Jose Mahfoud Is Arrested

Dr. Jose Mahfoud, a naturopathic physician who practiced at Sophia Natural Health Center in Brookfield, Connecticut, has been arrested following allegations involving a juvenile patient.

According to the Brookfield Police Department, Mahfoud was arrested on September 10, 2026, following a months-long investigation, which “began after a juvenile made a disclosure to Brookfield Police Youth Officer Heller.”

Police allege Mahfoud provided methamphetamine to the juvenile patient while he was receiving treatment at Sophia Natural Health Center, where Mahfoud practiced. Mahfoud also allegedly sexually assaulted the patient.

The Brookfield Police Department stated in their press release:  “This remains an ongoing investigation. Anyone who may have information regarding Dr. Jose Mahfoud or information that may be relevant to this investigation is asked to contact Youth Officer Heller at mheller@brookfieldct.gov  or call 203-740-4135.”

The Charges Dr. Jose Mahfoud Faces

Mahfoud was charged with the following:

  • Sexual Assault 2nd Degree
  • Distribution of a controlled substance to person <18 yr

He has pleaded not guilty to both charges. His next court appearance is scheduled for September 28 in Connecticut Superior Court in Danbury, CT.

What Is Dr. Jose Mahfoud Accused Of?

The arrest warrant affidavit provides additional details about the alleged crimes. According to the News Times, the juvenile told investigators that he had been seeing Mahfoud at the center for two years.

The teenager told investigators “on June 3 that Mahfoud had supplied him with methamphetamine and they injected the drug together at the health center, the warrant says. The victim said he also went to Mahfoud for marijuana and nicotine, according to the warrant.” (News Times)

In connection with Mahfoud’s arrest, investigators executed a search warrant at Sophia Natural Health Center.

They also examined communications between Mahfoud and the juvenile and learned that they had communicated through Telegram. A Brookfield police youth officer gained access to the juvenile’s account and “subsequently communicated with Mahfoud as part of the investigation.”

According to the News Times, “With help from the federal Department of Homeland Security, police uncovered ‘sexually suggestive’ messages between Mahfoud and the teen and ‘intimate’ photos of the juvenile sent to Mahfoud,” per the affidavit.

According to investigators, the juvenile said that he sent Mahfoud nude photographs “in exchange for vapes” and that Mahfoud had sexual contact with him. The teenager also alleged that Mahfoud discussed accessing the dark web and child pornography with him.

“The teen said he told some of his friends about getting marijuana from a doctor in exchange for providing naked photos of himself, but he lied and said the doctor was female ‘because he felt bad about the relationship he was in since it was a guy,’ the warrant says.” (News Times)

Dr. Jose Mahfoud’s Professional Background

Mahfoud has been practicing naturopathic medicine in Connecticut for more than a decade.

Connecticut licensing records currently list Mahfoud as a naturopathic physician under License No. 456. His license was granted on December 16, 2010, and is currently listed as active, with an expiration date of August 31, 2027. The state licensing record currently lists no licensure actions or pending charges.

According to his biography on an archived webpage of Sophia Natural Health, “Dr. Jose’ Mahfoud obtained his medical degree (MD) in 2003, in the Dominican Republic. Soon after, he moved to Connecticut to train in Naturopathic Medicine and Acupuncture at the University of Bridgeport, earning both degrees in 2010 and 2011, respectively. He established a practice in Milford, CT where he offered naturopathic care and acupuncture, mainly serving Fairfield County’s Hispanic population. He became a faculty member at UB as well as the former Associate Dean of Clinical Education & Chief Medical Officer in the University of Bridgeport School of Naturopathic Medicine for several years, keeping a work balance between academia and patient care for over a decade.”

Per his LinkedIn, Mahfoud also worked for Novo TeleHealth as a contract naturopathic physician from April 2021 to May 2022.

His LinkedIn profile lists him as the current assistant medical director at Sophia Natural Health Center, a position he has held since May 2022.

Could Sophia Natural Health Center Be Held Legally Responsible?

According to CT Post, “A person who answered the phone at the health center Monday said representatives of the business would not comment.”

At the time of this writing, it is unclear whether Mahfoud remains employed by Sophia Natural Health Center.

The allegations against Mahfoud raise serious questions about the policies and safeguards in place at Sophia Natural Health Center, particularly for juvenile patients.

The criminal case will determine whether Mahfoud is found guilty of the charges against him. A civil investigation, however, may separately examine whether Sophia Natural Health Center took reasonable measures to protect its patients and whether there were complaints, warning signs, or other circumstances that should have prompted additional supervision or intervention.

Depending on the evidence, relevant questions may include:

  • What policies governed the treatment of minor patients and communications between providers and patients;
  • Whether Sophia Natural Healther Center previously received complaints, concerns, or reports involving Mahfoud;
  • Whether employees or administrators observed concerning conduct or other warning signs;
  • Whether the practice had and appropriately enforced policies designed to protect patients from sexual abuse or exploitation.

Whether Sophia Natural Health Center could face civil liability would depend on the specific facts, including what the practice knew or reasonably should have known and whether it took reasonable steps to protect patients.

Civil litigation can provide survivors with a pathway to hold institutions accountable, pursue compensation for the harm they have suffered, and encourage stronger safeguards designed to better protect others in the future.
